Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Missouri-Columbia. We are nestled in a lovely university town half-way between Kansas City and St. Louis. Our restaurants, shopping and entertainment continue to increase in excellence. Recreational activities in the Ozark Mountains beckon many of us who like canoeing and camping on their beautiful rivers. The University provides intellectual excitement through its diverse faculty and the youthful enthusiasm of its students.

The Department is affiliated with a broad array of psychiatric facilities including Harry S. Truman Memorial Veteran’s Administration Hospital, Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center (a 69 bed adult and child-adolescent inpatient treatment hospital), Fulton State Hospital (a full range inpatient forensic treatment facility), Royal Oaks Hospital (primarily a child-adolescent inpatient facility,a division of Pathways Behavioral Health) and Burrell Behavioral Health (both broad spectrum outpatient clinics for the serious and persistently mentally ill). The close proximity of the VA Hospital and MMMHC to the University Hospital minimizes travel time for residents and faculty and increases the options for collaboration. Our University Hospital Psychosomatic Consultation Service and adult outpatient clinic provide unique treatment approaches to the people of the University, Columbia and Central Missouri.

Our leading edge research activities involve neuropsychiatric engineering efforts to develop mathematical models of psychiatric disorders, algorithms for predicting patients who do not keep clinic appointments, innovative treatment options for patients with autism, and the development of 3-D models for the neurobiology of addictions and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Our teaching faculty is deeply involved with the education of general psychiatry residents and our fellows in the child, forensic and geriatric programs. We are first and foremost a clinical training facility aiding our students to become effective, competent and confident clinicians.
